After working in Sunderland Software City (SSC) for a week to simulate work experience, I must say, it was one of the most enriching experiences I’ve had in years. The work environment was extremely welcoming and the people I worked with were happy to answer questions and offer guidance.
I worked under Steven Brewer. For the week, I was given a primary task to work on and other tasks that I was also supposed to complete. Just that itself taught me that work should never be focused on one singular task. I worked on the primary task whenever I could but would have to stop for meetings, notes, and side projects. I was introduced to new software tools and new technologies, and I was given new opportunities to see things I normally would never have seen.
Key Experiences and Learnings
Monday recap Meeting
I attended my first meeting on Monday which was a recap meeting. Everyone expressed their thoughts on events that happened last week and potential improvements for future reference. It opened my eyes to the need for reflection whilst working and how much of a difference open discussion can make.
Newcastle Bootcamp
I was taken on a trip to Newcastle and got to attend a bootcamp. At this bootcamp, we were given a simulated project where people needed to find methods to identify sole traders. This experience allowed me to hone my research skills as I looked for potential sources.
PROTO Tour
Whilst in Newcastle, I was also taken to PROTO. I was given a tour, where I saw many powerful and advanced technologies in video making and graphics. They had VR headsets that we were able to try and were great to experience. It was great to just see this technology first-hand and truly appreciate it.
Main Task and Meetings
After working on the main task, Steven and I had a meeting with the client to demonstrate our solution to his problem. He seemed pleased with it and was willing to further communicate with the company to help. The task was complete, so it was nice to see that effort bear fruit.
To Conclude
Overall, the experience was a great simulation of the work of a real company (because it was). I was able to gain a clearer and simpler understanding of how general workings look like for companies and what I should expect from an efficient and successful company.
I'd recommend that anyone interested in tech or looking for sector-specific work experience, go for it! These organisations can provide you with work that will be within your experience level while also allowing you to get a clear understanding. It was truly an enriching and valuable experience for me.
