Wanting to improve as a developer, Shawn was excited to gain experience from TechTalent Pro and use the programme as a launching pad to land a permanent role in the tech sector.
Tech Talent Pro offers software developers and website engineers the opportunity to learn how projects are run by working in a team led by our Senior Developer and gain real industry experience by working with clients. This week we caught up with Shawn to see how his experience is going.
What skills did you develop throughout the experience?
“Definitely communication. I was used to working by myself, so working with teams and Workflow really helped me develop those skills. I think that’s crucial when operating in a working environment as a development team”
“I learned about new tools that can be used to build Web apps. It highlighted the importance of making Web apps accessible and how I can do that”.
Any highlight or stand out moments you recall?
“My first merge request, where I had initially thought my code that was to be added was solid. My senior developer, John Park, when reviewing it found several mistakes which helped me realise, I had a lot to learn.”
What has been your proudest achievement during the experience?
“I recall the first time I was presenting work my team had built for them. They gave us good feedback, which I left feeling satisfied knowing that the work I am doing is appreciated and had an impact on the real world”.
What would you say to anyone who is unsure about attending the programme?
“Why would you not want to learn while getting paid?”
“There are a lot of companies offering some form of experience such as internships and volunteering, but they don’t pay you. With this programme, I get paid, gain experience and add more skills onto my CV.”
What is next for you in the future?
“I want to apply what I have learned throughout the 6 months into my own projects and want to make my portfolio more accessible. I am keen to develop more experience and contribute to software that is impactful in any future roles I find myself in.”
